M’s Blanket

I finished something this week! My faith has been restored that I can actually finish something and I’m really looking forward to working on something different for a while. I always forget how much work there is to go into a blanket and this one was no exception.

I’ve been working on this on and off since February according to this blog. Note to self – make sure you note accurate start dates on Ravelry! While I’m at my parents these last two weeks I chose to buckle down and just get it Done with a big D.

While I’ve been here I finished squaring off around 3/4 of the circles. I then joined them by crochet; realised that that pulled them in too tight and had to pull it out and stitch them together. If i was at home i would have tried again with a larger hook but I didn’t have one with me.

After that I edged the whole thing, there’s 1 row of UK treble crochet and then 2 rows of UK Linked Double Trebles. It creates a fabric not dissimilar to that of Tunisian crochet, but it’s worked stitch by stitch instead of two rows or passes like Tunisian.

A simple M embroidered on the bottom by hand completes it and hopefully makes it a keep sake he’ll cherish forever.

The yarn used is DMC Natura 100% cotton. I REALLY like this yarn; it can be a little splitty at times, but the colours are fantastic.

I used 6 different colours. One ball of each for the circles and then 3 balls of the Denim for the squaring off and the edging. The blanket isn’t huge, but it has a good weight to it – 400g to be precise. It’s heavy enough to use as a play blanket, enough drape to be used to make a fort and soft enough to snuggle under for nap times.

Only time will tell I suppose.

Have a bonus picture of a low flying lemur. The Black and White Ruffs (flying one) really didn’t like the Ring Tailed stealing their food! We went to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Tuesday and had a great time despite it being BOILING. We spent 4 hours there and had to beat a hasty retreat if it wasn’t so hot I’d have dragged Rhys around a second time!

UFYL Day 3-

Yesterday was a day off because I worked all day. The idea is to get the house to a stage where 20 mins a day in the dedicated room will do it; but we are not yet at that stage so I had a day off. OH did some laundry and attempted to scrub at a mould stain. Today- Bathroom, Spare Room and Cupboard Under the stairs.   Bathroom:   Before So to start off with grout got scrubbed. See the little white patch in the before? That was where I’d attacked it with baking soda about a week ago. As a result the bathroom was clean-ish but horribly cluttered. I got rid of any bottles that we didn’t use anymore, any face cloths that were damaged because they hadn’t been washed in a while (Note to self, next paycheck buy new ones- Ebay?) and just generally sorted. All surfaces got wiped down including the outside of the toilet bowl, the stem of the sink, the pipes behind the loo, the outside of the bath and the skirting boards. Emptied the bin, removed that POS “organiser” from a...

Staycation

Hello all! I’ve had a very busy weekend with my parents being down. While waiting for them to come down I got another 4 squares done on my sock yarn blanket. The left two are from a special mini skein I was given several years ago. I’m not entirely sure when I got given it, but it was a very small skein, probably under 20 yards. Just right to add into my blanket and serve as a reminder though! Saturday we went to Dyffryn gardens – A national trust property that they’re working on restoring. None of us are gardeners, but there was such a lovely selection – In the summer I’ll borrow more photos off my mum’s camera as I thought I’d forgotten mine for the start. Rhys was very enamoured by the cactus room. Sunday we were up and off an on. We went on some Segway’s at Chepstow diving centre, as we booked so late 9am was the only time slot, which was nice as we got to have the rest of the day to ourselves. Poor Mum fell off at the last bit (she’d misjud...

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...
