Craft Update

More of a Crochet update than a knitting update unfortunately. I learned to crochet about 2 months ago now through the wonders of Youtube. A month ago my new (shiny!) LYS started offering a learn to crochet course and I'm really glad I went because it confirmed that what the internet taught me was right. I am far more of a visual in person learner than I am an online one. I am, excuse the pun HOOKED! it's great fun and has such great uses and is so much faster a lot of the time than knitting.

A week ago I thought "I want to make my Gran a blanket for her 80th birthday!" This project took me just a week. It measures 30.5 inches square and is incredibly light due to the 3 or 4 ply yarn used to make it and a 4.25 mm Boye hook.. My parents and Uncle and Aunt have paid for her to go on a bus trip holiday to Yorkshire, and even though she's going in July this should be light enough for her to take with her if she needs it in her suitcase. All in all for a week it's been an incredibly quick blanket. I'd have loved to have done something bigger, but unfortunately ran out of time. I can always make her a bigger blanket for Christmas I suppose :)

Just some simple Granny Square dishcloths, practice mainly. A plethora of gauge issues on these, however they still do the job they were intended to do perfectly. Also Stashbusting, 2.5 balls of cotton is now out of my life forever! I must dig out the rest of my cotton and take it with me to my mums, she likes hand knitted and crocheted dishcloths.

3 hats made following the Simple Earflap Hat (Rav Link) this pattern is so easy. The Top Right and bottom hat are made using left overs of Jager Extra Fine Merino Aran from a jumper. The top right is done using an 5.5mm hook, and increasing to 70, not 60 as the pattern suggests. The other two are made by again increasing to 70, but this time using a 5.0mm hook. It has made all of the difference. The other two hats are in the process of getting flowers as we speak; however I'm having a wee bit of a Goldilocks problem with them. This flower is too small, this flower is too big! I've struck on the "just right" for one of them, and now for the second.

A wee baby bit of knitting has snuck it's way in. It's the Short Row Rib Scarf from what was MagKnits but is still archived on the web. I have a copy of this pattern saved on my hard drive, my external and a paper copy somewhere. I love this pattern. This one is for Dragonboy because he's been asking for a new scarf for several years now.

Cushion cover. All I need to do is weave in the ends and US SC the top shut. It's been sat like this for weeks. I really do not like weaving in ends. It was an attempt to see if I could do a Granny "Square" rectangle. And yes, turns out I can.

More Knitting! This is the back of Misha, a pattern in March's Lets Knit. I'm doing it with Araucania Ranco Solid. I have 4 skeins of this, though I think I will need some more to finish off this jumper. Luckily Get Knitted sells this yarn and can send it by post and as it is hand dyed there is no lots.

And finally, a scarf made of US DC with a SC border in Black. The Camo Yarn in Knitpicks WOTA that I got in a swap several years ago and the black is just plain black acrylic. This is sat in the gift giving bag for a future yet to be determined occasion lol.

UFYL Day 3-

Yesterday was a day off because I worked all day. The idea is to get the house to a stage where 20 mins a day in the dedicated room will do it; but we are not yet at that stage so I had a day off. OH did some laundry and attempted to scrub at a mould stain. Today- Bathroom, Spare Room and Cupboard Under the stairs.   Bathroom:   Before So to start off with grout got scrubbed. See the little white patch in the before? That was where I’d attacked it with baking soda about a week ago. As a result the bathroom was clean-ish but horribly cluttered. I got rid of any bottles that we didn’t use anymore, any face cloths that were damaged because they hadn’t been washed in a while (Note to self, next paycheck buy new ones- Ebay?) and just generally sorted. All surfaces got wiped down including the outside of the toilet bowl, the stem of the sink, the pipes behind the loo, the outside of the bath and the skirting boards. Emptied the bin, removed that POS “organiser” from a...

Staycation

Hello all! I’ve had a very busy weekend with my parents being down. While waiting for them to come down I got another 4 squares done on my sock yarn blanket. The left two are from a special mini skein I was given several years ago. I’m not entirely sure when I got given it, but it was a very small skein, probably under 20 yards. Just right to add into my blanket and serve as a reminder though! Saturday we went to Dyffryn gardens – A national trust property that they’re working on restoring. None of us are gardeners, but there was such a lovely selection – In the summer I’ll borrow more photos off my mum’s camera as I thought I’d forgotten mine for the start. Rhys was very enamoured by the cactus room. Sunday we were up and off an on. We went on some Segway’s at Chepstow diving centre, as we booked so late 9am was the only time slot, which was nice as we got to have the rest of the day to ourselves. Poor Mum fell off at the last bit (she’d misjud...

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...
