Year of Projects–Week 11

Yet again been far too long since my last year of projects update. And despite that most of the things I’m posting today were not on my list!

Today I woke feeling a lot better within myself then I have in a long time – I get the feeling that my thyroid tablets may be starting to help again, maybe it’s the fact that at least in the corner of Wales spring seems to be in the air again; who knows.

Yesterday the overtime at work didn’t pan out. Systems were running late and it was all a bit of a nightmare really; so an hour and a half after we got in we gave it all up for a bad job and came home again. In order to cheer me up that afternoon I whacked out this sweet little baby hat.

The pattern is Aviatrix; a phenomenal FREE pattern for several yarn weights and lots and lots of sizes. It’s designed as more of a bonnet then a hat; with the aim of staying on babies heads more successfully than the traditional hat. I made this one in Aran weight, using a 5.0mm needle and I dare say it will be my last. Several other knitters have done the bumpy row (made by knitting on the WS row) in a contrasting colour which looks amazing! It’s pre blocked in this photo, and those bumps on the short rows should easily come out with blocking.

Secondly we have Man Socks for my dad. Advance present for fathers day done and out of the way; yay! These are simple socks knitted toe up two at a time. The top of the foot is 2x2 rib and the bottom stockinete; then we have the padded Sweet Tomato heel and 2x2 rib for the whole of the leg. The yarn is Regia Tweed; which is a thicker yarn than normal sock yarn. These are knitted on 3.5mm needles. The yarn is admittedly not my favourite; though if my dad likes his socks as I suspect he will then I imagine that there shall be more of them in my future.

The circle blanket continues; I’ve not finished the white circles and am currently weaving in the ends. There are 2 more colours to do and then I can start the process of making them square and joining them together.

Meanwhile I’m dying to cast on something in this. The yarn is made from Tencel and Pearl fibres mixed together. Yes pearl! Apparently the poorer grade ones are crushed and the powder is blown at the yarn; fascinating stuff and such a silky smooth texture too. While ordering some beads as part of a gift I couldn’t resist these beautiful blue ones to go with this yarn.

Last but finally not least on the WIP list *is* a year of projects pattern. Mary Warmers; the yarn is hand dyed by my old LYS and is beautiful combination of yellows and green and browns. Lush!

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...

Thinking about 2017 goals!

I'm currently laid up with what we think is Slapped Cheek. Slapped cheek is a thing that kids get, and my bosses daughter had a case. When it affects adults it shows up as joint pain and swelling and flu like symptoms. Ouch. As a result I can't do much knitting or spinning or crochet. What else can I do but have a think about what my goals for 2017 should be? My goals for 2016 were fairly simple 80/20 Yarn used to yarn bought ratio (We’ll see how this goes!) Finish using 2015’s Wonderwool yarn before 2016’s WW (Faberge, Sunny Days Shawlette, Pink Topaz)  12 pairs of Socks in 2016  So I managed 2 and 3, and the less said about goal 1 the better I suppose. I must have added at least 100 skeins or balls of yarn to the stash this year. To be fair, I did go to Canada (where I bought lots of yarn) and have a fortuitous year with Wonderwool this year. By comparison, I've used up around 60; which really is no mean feat. Proposed Goals!* 1) Yarn Management! I'm st...

March Goals

I’ve been trying to write a recap of 2020 crafting for the last two months. It’s very odd that I’ve been stopping myself from writing other posts because I “must” recap what has honestly been one of the weirdest years in history. Not that my craft has been weird of course, but small acts like photographing everything felt overwhelming at times last year and I’m taking it as a personal success that at least things are recorded on Ravelry.   So I’m going to try a more regular check in, I’m currently working on a variety of WIPs and I’d love to aim for at least a monthly update on where they stand and new cast ons or ideas.   Current WIPS   Shine Shawl:   This is being worked in some yarn my parents bought for me as a Christmas present from their trip to Scotland in the few non-lockdown weeks we had last summer. They picked out 3 colours for me a lovely tomato red, a deep sandy yellow and a rich chocolate brown. They’re tweedy and they have occasi...
