Sunday F.O’s

Another week has passed and Christmas is drawing near. I’m starting to get legitimately worried about my workload and the chances of achieving it!

This week however I’ve made incredible progress and finished 2 things!

First we have Fatty Lumpkin who I’ve taken to calling Shaddowfax after Gandalf’s horse in Lord of The Rings.

It’s a Heidi Bears pattern which are wonderful as usual. He’s made in Stylecraft special a 100% acrylic yarn. It’s affordable but not cheap and nasty. This time I used all of the beige ball (100g) and part of each colour. This design obviously takes up a lot because of the mane and tail.

Maggie loves him as well <3

The 4 other colours (Red, Yellow, Blue and Green) are the colours of the Lincolnshire flag. I used a 3.5mm hook for the DK yarn to ensure he came out a little bigger. I used the traditional African Flower design but used a magic circle in the centre.

Secondly I finished the Francie socks. These are going to be for my sister for Christmas. They also cross off a year of projects item too!

Number one most attractive trait in a man – willingness to pose wearing socks for your blog. He even clipped his toenails first! Okay, so I know that’s an odd thing but its a pre-requisite for him before he can wear his hand knit socks. Saves on the disappointment and the darning for me.

The yarn is Wendy Roam Fusion which should last and is machine washable – always a bonus. These were all in all a quick knit and I didn’t get second sock syndrome as I usually do when knitting socks separately.

This week I also made a special cake for a friend’s birthday. What can I say I’ve been watching far too much Great British Bake Off for my own good. In fact I’ve got so obsessed I’ve been watching the Australian version online too!

It’s incredibly unhealthy but it looks so cute! It’s a 2 layer chocolate mud cake. I sandwiched it together with a little buttercream frosting and used that to stick the Kit Kats to the side.  The official version used Giant Kit Kats but as I couldn’t find those I had to use regular ones. It took nearly 3 multipacks!

The mud is Chocolate Ganache. In order to prevent spillage I scooped a little of the cake out of the top so the pigs are mainly in a hollow.  The pigs are made with marzipan and the smallest bit of red food colouring.

Please excuse the messy kitchen!

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...

Thinking about 2017 goals!

I'm currently laid up with what we think is Slapped Cheek. Slapped cheek is a thing that kids get, and my bosses daughter had a case. When it affects adults it shows up as joint pain and swelling and flu like symptoms. Ouch. As a result I can't do much knitting or spinning or crochet. What else can I do but have a think about what my goals for 2017 should be? My goals for 2016 were fairly simple 80/20 Yarn used to yarn bought ratio (We’ll see how this goes!) Finish using 2015’s Wonderwool yarn before 2016’s WW (Faberge, Sunny Days Shawlette, Pink Topaz)  12 pairs of Socks in 2016  So I managed 2 and 3, and the less said about goal 1 the better I suppose. I must have added at least 100 skeins or balls of yarn to the stash this year. To be fair, I did go to Canada (where I bought lots of yarn) and have a fortuitous year with Wonderwool this year. By comparison, I've used up around 60; which really is no mean feat. Proposed Goals!* 1) Yarn Management! I'm st...

March Goals

I’ve been trying to write a recap of 2020 crafting for the last two months. It’s very odd that I’ve been stopping myself from writing other posts because I “must” recap what has honestly been one of the weirdest years in history. Not that my craft has been weird of course, but small acts like photographing everything felt overwhelming at times last year and I’m taking it as a personal success that at least things are recorded on Ravelry.   So I’m going to try a more regular check in, I’m currently working on a variety of WIPs and I’d love to aim for at least a monthly update on where they stand and new cast ons or ideas.   Current WIPS   Shine Shawl:   This is being worked in some yarn my parents bought for me as a Christmas present from their trip to Scotland in the few non-lockdown weeks we had last summer. They picked out 3 colours for me a lovely tomato red, a deep sandy yellow and a rich chocolate brown. They’re tweedy and they have occasi...
