F.O’s Galore!

Phew – It’s only MONDAY in my week off work and already it’s been a busy one.

Saturday Morning we went to the local sewing machine shop and came out with this box! It’s not the model I thought I would get; but there was apparently problems with the one I wanted regarding the bobbin case. This one – no problems reported so happily on my way.

Here’s what he looks like straight out of the box. I’m calling him Jaffa because of the orange colour and the fact it’s a Janome. I’m loving him so far. So much easier than my Dunelm sewing machine and it’s a joy to work with him. Far more modern than any machine I’ve used before; you don’t even need to use a foot pedal it can be just button controlled along with an automatic thread cutter that I love. Putting the bobbin in the bottom is so easy on this machine I just am so in love!

Testing out some stitches on two scrap pieces of material. It’s now hung up in the rat cage! The squares weren’t properly cut out as I didn’t have fabric scissors at the time – just blunted yarn ones and the top thread in several parts kept breaking. This was due to a very poor quality thread and the issue has gone away on changing it.

My Rotary cutter and proper fabric shears have arrived today though (Thank you Amazon Prime!) so I’m hoping to do some real sewing today.

Making the most of the dreadful weather we’ve been having these past few days with some candles being lit. Would you believe that this was 10am on Sunday morning? The little Owls are a new addition from TK Maxx the other week. There’s 3 of the little fellas with the third living on my desk upstairs in my new craft room.

We’ve been spending some time this weekend just being. Connecting back to us and our little family. Rattie cuddles as well. This is our pretty girl Esme who likes hiding in sleeves.

F.O Number 1 is a Cowl in Squashbottom Fibres hand spun and hand dyed. The pattern is Old Shale Cowl and I knitted it with 4.0 mm needles. This was an incredibly quick knit, helped by the 4 row repeat which was memorable enough for the bus knitting through the week. This pattern is wonderful for hand spun and plays really well with the thick and thin of the yarn.

I also finished off my dad’s cardigan this week!  I have no shots of it on a model because it’s far far to big for Rhys and far too long for me. The cuffs are turned up in this picture but I’m hoping it won’t be too long for him. It feels like the yarn grew immensely on washing – so if it is too long I’m hoping a quick trip through the washer and dryer might bring it back up again. There’s nothing I can do but wait until Christmas and hope it fits. P1020279

To finish on a happier F.O note – Dalek Gloves. Rhys is taking the flack for these if the yellow Dalek is in fact not her favourite colour Dalek.

This now takes me down to only 5 knitted or crocheted things to make for Christmas and the bags to put them all in. Who knows, I might even be nearly done by the end of the week.

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...

Thinking about 2017 goals!

I'm currently laid up with what we think is Slapped Cheek. Slapped cheek is a thing that kids get, and my bosses daughter had a case. When it affects adults it shows up as joint pain and swelling and flu like symptoms. Ouch. As a result I can't do much knitting or spinning or crochet. What else can I do but have a think about what my goals for 2017 should be? My goals for 2016 were fairly simple 80/20 Yarn used to yarn bought ratio (We’ll see how this goes!) Finish using 2015’s Wonderwool yarn before 2016’s WW (Faberge, Sunny Days Shawlette, Pink Topaz)  12 pairs of Socks in 2016  So I managed 2 and 3, and the less said about goal 1 the better I suppose. I must have added at least 100 skeins or balls of yarn to the stash this year. To be fair, I did go to Canada (where I bought lots of yarn) and have a fortuitous year with Wonderwool this year. By comparison, I've used up around 60; which really is no mean feat. Proposed Goals!* 1) Yarn Management! I'm st...

March Goals

I’ve been trying to write a recap of 2020 crafting for the last two months. It’s very odd that I’ve been stopping myself from writing other posts because I “must” recap what has honestly been one of the weirdest years in history. Not that my craft has been weird of course, but small acts like photographing everything felt overwhelming at times last year and I’m taking it as a personal success that at least things are recorded on Ravelry.   So I’m going to try a more regular check in, I’m currently working on a variety of WIPs and I’d love to aim for at least a monthly update on where they stand and new cast ons or ideas.   Current WIPS   Shine Shawl:   This is being worked in some yarn my parents bought for me as a Christmas present from their trip to Scotland in the few non-lockdown weeks we had last summer. They picked out 3 colours for me a lovely tomato red, a deep sandy yellow and a rich chocolate brown. They’re tweedy and they have occasi...
