Ziprelaxagon

I finished my Ziprelaxagon socks the other week. Finished objects just don’t seem to be flowing at the moment… life seems to be getting in the way. After Thursday evening we’ll have been to the bank 3 times in the last 2 weeks. Once to sort out something, then back because we forgot some important information and then to switch over the ISA to a better rate one. That and vets visits, with 3 lump removals in as many months (Esme first, then Gytha, then Maggie’s today) means coming home, sleeping and going back out again!

Probably not helped by the long term project being a heavily cabled laceweight shawl. I do only have 15 rounds to go on that though; so I’m hoping for an October finish.

Anyway, here’s a stretched out picture; I wore the socks on the day they were photographed and they are SO COMFY.

The first sock was started on 2.0mm needles. You start with the foot, working upwards (the toe is added later) and there’s a choice of 3 unit sizes, small medium and large depending on your foot size. I used medium units and changed to large for the heel. I found that this was still a little tight, so changed to 2.5 mm needles and large units from the leg upwards. This sock is definitely more snug.

For the second sock I used 2.5mm needles for it all and medium units, apart from the very top tier which is large units – to give a bit of extra stretch in the leg. I used standard units throughout, even though there is stretchy unit directions included.

The yarn is the Aldi Sock yarn I bought last year. This was the colourway I was least excited about, but I do like how it’s knitted up in this wool.

If (when probably) I make these again I’d probably use stretchy units for the last tier, to see if they hold up better… but I have a history of socks not staying up well anyway commercial or hand knitted!

UFYL Day 3-

Yesterday was a day off because I worked all day. The idea is to get the house to a stage where 20 mins a day in the dedicated room will do it; but we are not yet at that stage so I had a day off. OH did some laundry and attempted to scrub at a mould stain. Today- Bathroom, Spare Room and Cupboard Under the stairs.   Bathroom:   Before So to start off with grout got scrubbed. See the little white patch in the before? That was where I’d attacked it with baking soda about a week ago. As a result the bathroom was clean-ish but horribly cluttered. I got rid of any bottles that we didn’t use anymore, any face cloths that were damaged because they hadn’t been washed in a while (Note to self, next paycheck buy new ones- Ebay?) and just generally sorted. All surfaces got wiped down including the outside of the toilet bowl, the stem of the sink, the pipes behind the loo, the outside of the bath and the skirting boards. Emptied the bin, removed that POS “organiser” from a...

Staycation

Hello all! I’ve had a very busy weekend with my parents being down. While waiting for them to come down I got another 4 squares done on my sock yarn blanket. The left two are from a special mini skein I was given several years ago. I’m not entirely sure when I got given it, but it was a very small skein, probably under 20 yards. Just right to add into my blanket and serve as a reminder though! Saturday we went to Dyffryn gardens – A national trust property that they’re working on restoring. None of us are gardeners, but there was such a lovely selection – In the summer I’ll borrow more photos off my mum’s camera as I thought I’d forgotten mine for the start. Rhys was very enamoured by the cactus room. Sunday we were up and off an on. We went on some Segway’s at Chepstow diving centre, as we booked so late 9am was the only time slot, which was nice as we got to have the rest of the day to ourselves. Poor Mum fell off at the last bit (she’d misjud...

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...
