Snow day!

My area has a RED warning for snow. Apparently this is issued so rarely it means serious business. This morning I woke to about an inch of snow at around 6am. By 9am there was nearly 4 inches on top of my bin. Despite this work was still open (even though they advised people not to make non essential journeys?) but I chose to wait it out and see, phoning in about 9. My worry wasn’t about getting in, it was about getting HOME at the end of the day; which turned out to be right. At 10am it was said that all of the bus services were cancelled until further notice. It’s slowed down dramatically now, but they sky is still white and I’m glad I called in- even if I have to use my own time for it (boo!). My prediction is that as it gets colder again tonight we’ll have even more snow fall.

Newport is pretty much built within hills and mountains. My house is in the bottom of the valley, so other places on higher ground are far worse off then we are.

This is our ghetto back yard; moving in in late September/Early October means we’ve not done anything to it. We can both probably count on one hand the amount of times we’ve actually even been out there! Spring this will change I hope!

Build up of snow on the top of the gate.

We don’t use this food waste box; and it’s been open in the back garden since before we moved in. With the heavy rain we’ve been having it’s filled with water and then today it’s frozen solid!

I’ve not seen heavy enough snow to coat a washing line in YEARS.

I know I know,

Personally I trust MYSELF fine in this weather. I don’t drive, but if I did I’d maybe worry about not trusting other people; as someone mercy to public transport I honestly don’t much trust them either (which is good because they shut the service off). The attitude we have to snow in this country is a strange one.

So instead today i’ve spent it cuddled up in my PJ’s. I’ve made beef stew for tomorrow, Peppermint Bark from left over candy canes and knitted on my socks.

Luckily Mr Postman delivered my new needles yesterday. Those are KnitPro Karbonz – The needle is Carbon Fibre and the tips are nickel plated. They’re incredibly smooth and a fast fast fast knitting experience. Despite there being a 2 changes between materials- the tips, needle and cable so far I’ve had no catches at all. I’d say they’re my new favourite needles, but I’m also fond of the Addi Lace tips that arrived at the same time.

Excuse the rubbish photo – that’s my chair (not my choice of print, but the suite was free!) but this is my other current project. It’s a huge Granny Stripe blanket made out of all of my old DK scraps. I’m trying to add one or two stripes onto it a day so it grows quicker. I’m also trying to be proactive about weaving in the ends before I get to the end. I’ve worked out it roughly needs to be 200 rows long, and that’s 400 ends.. so I’d better make a start!

Hope your all doing well- remember to stay safe if there’s any snow where you are!

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...

Thinking about 2017 goals!

I'm currently laid up with what we think is Slapped Cheek. Slapped cheek is a thing that kids get, and my bosses daughter had a case. When it affects adults it shows up as joint pain and swelling and flu like symptoms. Ouch. As a result I can't do much knitting or spinning or crochet. What else can I do but have a think about what my goals for 2017 should be? My goals for 2016 were fairly simple 80/20 Yarn used to yarn bought ratio (We’ll see how this goes!) Finish using 2015’s Wonderwool yarn before 2016’s WW (Faberge, Sunny Days Shawlette, Pink Topaz)  12 pairs of Socks in 2016  So I managed 2 and 3, and the less said about goal 1 the better I suppose. I must have added at least 100 skeins or balls of yarn to the stash this year. To be fair, I did go to Canada (where I bought lots of yarn) and have a fortuitous year with Wonderwool this year. By comparison, I've used up around 60; which really is no mean feat. Proposed Goals!* 1) Yarn Management! I'm st...

March Goals

I’ve been trying to write a recap of 2020 crafting for the last two months. It’s very odd that I’ve been stopping myself from writing other posts because I “must” recap what has honestly been one of the weirdest years in history. Not that my craft has been weird of course, but small acts like photographing everything felt overwhelming at times last year and I’m taking it as a personal success that at least things are recorded on Ravelry.   So I’m going to try a more regular check in, I’m currently working on a variety of WIPs and I’d love to aim for at least a monthly update on where they stand and new cast ons or ideas.   Current WIPS   Shine Shawl:   This is being worked in some yarn my parents bought for me as a Christmas present from their trip to Scotland in the few non-lockdown weeks we had last summer. They picked out 3 colours for me a lovely tomato red, a deep sandy yellow and a rich chocolate brown. They’re tweedy and they have occasi...
