Quick Post

Hello all; a very quick post from me tonight as I’ve been feeling a little guilty. These few weeks in the summer always mark my internet absence. We visit my parents and usually my laptop never even makes it out of the bag. This year because I was treated to a new shiny one which is better than my old one or the other half’s laptop it’s been seeing a lot of action. OH has decided that he rather likes it and the way it runs his games including the new Civilisation expansion he’s been so desperately waiting for!

With this in mind (and the tablet packed for me) I wanted to have a good go at crafting this holiday. As usual I exceeded my expectations somewhat and I know I will go home without starting some of the things I wanted too. On the way up I managed to get a few inches done on dad’s jumper and this week while I’ve had time and space I’ve really buckled down and concentrated on Nephews blanket. He turns 1 at the end of next month and what better present than a blankie from Auntie Hannah.

So far this holiday I managed to edge about 70% of the blocks; and then I started crocheting them together. This for some reason ended up too tight, so I had to rip that out and joined with sewing. I’ve also made good progress on the border. I should finish that tomorrow which means I can block the blanket. I’m currently undecided if it needs and I-cord edging or not. I do love the way it just finishes off an item. I also bought a skein of embroidery thread to chain stitch on an M when I’m done.

After that I think it will be time to swatch for Celestarium before going home. I swatched before I left and had to go up a needle size, but overall wasn’t happy with my selection of beads. I didn’t think they popped enough. When in Nottingham the other week I found a bead shop just off the central square and invested in a few other colours of beads. At £3.50 a pack it was a far cheaper investment than changing the yarn to fit the beads!

The one thing I do have to do while I’m down is to sew Rhys some pyjama bottoms. I’m really hoping that me and Mum can carve out some time on Saturday to do this. We’re sending Rhys and my Dad off to the pub (they can argue about who’s driving – no pub in the village) and we’re going to cook some Thai food for tea together and hopefully sew these PJ’s. I’ve had some trouble with my machine, so I brought it with me in the hops that someone experienced can look at it and tell me if it’s me or if it’s the machine. As much as I’d like a new machine at the moment it’s not possible so I’m hoping it’s me. I’d love to be able to sew a bit more, even just hammocks for the Rats!

I’ve been good so far and not bought any yarn for me! I needed an extra 2 balls for this blanket (I’m sure I must have left one at home, when I’m done I’ll weigh it to find out) and bought some sock yarn for my sisters Christmas present. That might all change in a few days as apparently there’s a nice yarn shop in Scunthorpe and we go there on Thursday to visit my great Aunt.

Other than that we’ve been off to places, reading relaxing and just spending time together and it’s been lovely.

Hopefully I’ll be back next week with a bit more meat to pad the bones of the blog!

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...

Thinking about 2017 goals!

I'm currently laid up with what we think is Slapped Cheek. Slapped cheek is a thing that kids get, and my bosses daughter had a case. When it affects adults it shows up as joint pain and swelling and flu like symptoms. Ouch. As a result I can't do much knitting or spinning or crochet. What else can I do but have a think about what my goals for 2017 should be? My goals for 2016 were fairly simple 80/20 Yarn used to yarn bought ratio (We’ll see how this goes!) Finish using 2015’s Wonderwool yarn before 2016’s WW (Faberge, Sunny Days Shawlette, Pink Topaz)  12 pairs of Socks in 2016  So I managed 2 and 3, and the less said about goal 1 the better I suppose. I must have added at least 100 skeins or balls of yarn to the stash this year. To be fair, I did go to Canada (where I bought lots of yarn) and have a fortuitous year with Wonderwool this year. By comparison, I've used up around 60; which really is no mean feat. Proposed Goals!* 1) Yarn Management! I'm st...
