Spring Fling

Ahh, it’s the first day of a 4 day weekend for me and I’m looking forward to it immensely. Last night I went out with work colleagues, as seems to be the Maundy Thursday tradition in the Civil Service. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, though felt quite drunk after 3 pints of Cider and a Gin and Tonic! Luckily I woke up today early (around 7) and without a headache.

I never used to be a morning person, but there is something to be said about waking up and having the whole day in front of you; throwing open the curtains and letting the light and breeze in and blasting the Radio.

So far this morning I’ve brought my wheel down for a bit of TLC, found a notebook to plan my Knitting and Crochet Blog Week posts in and knitted a few rounds on a pair of socks. After I’ve finished typing this I’m going to have a sort out of the TV unit which contains our DVDs and Games and maybe make a start on my Bookshelf – which seems to have become a dumping ground for everything by my fella – even though he doesn’t read!

I have some F.O’s to show today. This is a jacket for my Mum’s Teacher, a present for Easter. My Mum saw my light blue feather and fan jacket I made over Christmas and requested one for her Teacher who loves to wear similar things. My mum is a teaching assistant in a school and it’s tradition to get a little gift for those you work with at Christmas, Easter and the end of the year. This is knitted in King Cole Smooth DK; which has a lovely drape and very even stitches, especially as it’s a 100% acrylic yarn.

This has a little story behind it. We went out for a Hen-Do to a popular Mexian chain restaurant. We’d finished our mains when a little Mouse came running out from under the table! I made this for the Hen, Eduardo the little Mexican Mouse. The pattern is Toe-Rag the Tube mouse (free!). His little Sombrero is crochet and his Poncho is kind of a mitred square. I had to change the ears as they were too big to fit under his hat. He now sits on the bride-to-be’s desk; although she did mention she wants to use him as a cat toy! (Eep!)

Lastly I finished my Celestarium the other week. I’m really hoping to get some better Photographs of this when I go to Wonderwool next week; as these were taken indoors after blocking (bellow) and during blocking (on my kitchen floor!)

For me this was definitely a product knit rather than a process one; by the end the rows were very long, with not a lot of action every chart. Luckily this meant I could work on it when I had a horrible head cold, but I was very glad to get it off the needles. I’ve never worn a shawl before, and didn’t really see myself as a shawl person, but I’ve worn this several times since casting off and I can’t wait to cast on my next shawl and go shopping for more shawl yarn at Wonderwool!

More cleaning and organising is calling my name! I really miss blogging, and I really hope to carve out some time to do more of it in the future, even if it is just a picture and a few short words.

Corwin

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans. Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it. Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign. A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats. He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came. We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep. Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area. He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was...

Thinking about 2017 goals!

I'm currently laid up with what we think is Slapped Cheek. Slapped cheek is a thing that kids get, and my bosses daughter had a case. When it affects adults it shows up as joint pain and swelling and flu like symptoms. Ouch. As a result I can't do much knitting or spinning or crochet. What else can I do but have a think about what my goals for 2017 should be? My goals for 2016 were fairly simple 80/20 Yarn used to yarn bought ratio (We’ll see how this goes!) Finish using 2015’s Wonderwool yarn before 2016’s WW (Faberge, Sunny Days Shawlette, Pink Topaz)  12 pairs of Socks in 2016  So I managed 2 and 3, and the less said about goal 1 the better I suppose. I must have added at least 100 skeins or balls of yarn to the stash this year. To be fair, I did go to Canada (where I bought lots of yarn) and have a fortuitous year with Wonderwool this year. By comparison, I've used up around 60; which really is no mean feat. Proposed Goals!* 1) Yarn Management! I'm st...
