Corwin

Sleeping

I was hoping I wouldn’t have to write this post for a while. I’d hoped at least not this side of Christmas; but he had other plans.

P1030003

Last Thursday Rhys came home from work to find him laid up in the cage, dehydrated and not interested in moving. Rhys tried tempting him with Peanut butter and he turned his nose up a it.

Corwin… not accepting food meant it was a bad sign.

Sweets

A few weeks ago he’d started to loose movement in his hind quarters – as can happen in old rats.

He was still moving around reasonably well; eating, drinking and snuggling and we agreed to take each day as it came.

We took him to the vets that evening, and all agreed that the best thing to do for him was to let him go easily, peacefully and quietly in his sleep.

Corwin came to us from SPA Vets in Gloucester. This was our vets before we moved to Newport and one I would heartily recommend to anyone in the area.

He’d wandered in through someone’s cat flap and realising (thank goodness!) that he was  domestic rat they scooped him up and took him in to SPA who contacted me and asked if I’d like another rat. As Corwin was male and we had females they offered to neuter him for us (for free! I told you they were amazing)

With that he came home to live with us.

From the get-go Corwin was a warm and loving rat. Gentle and not bothered by the squabbles of the girls he normally kept out of everything – unless there was food involved.

P1010787

He loved food, and rapidly put on quite a bit of weight with us!

P1020359

I blame Rhys, but his head was up at the bars every time you walked past and you just couldn’t resist giving him a little bite. It was hilarious to see him with a whole sweet corn. He used to lay across it and eat from one end so no one else could get a look in!

P1020399

He loved going to the vets – especially his “girlfriend” Nat the receptionist. He used to let himself be loved and held like a baby for her.

P1020208

He wasn’t so keen on Paul the Vet though – when he’d had enough he just used to climb back in his travel cage and refuse to come back out!

P1010618

We had a hairy moment about a year into owning him where he developed a serious head tilt. He never fully returned to a flat head, but coped remarkably well regardless – giving the girls a serious run for their money!

P1020428

That and the time we thought he had a lump on his eye! Serious panic, rushed to the vets and possible talk about surgery…. turns out it was a lump of soft paper bedding that went when I had the bright flash of inspiration to flush his eye with water! D’oh!

ChunkylovesDaddy

He had the sweetest sleeping face in the world, he slept like a little angel. Maybe because of his rough start in life he always looked content with a warm place to sleep and a pile of rats on top of him.

P1010834

Maybe because of his size he was always a cushion for the girls – always at the bottom of the pile, squished under everyone else

. P1020602

That being said he often pushed his way in if he felt excluded!

P1020200

In his old age he got incredibly sweet. Hours and hours of cuddles with me. Sleeping on me and enjoying me and him time. I’m so glad we got to spend that time together. It’s something we’ll always treasure.

UFYL Day 3-

Yesterday was a day off because I worked all day. The idea is to get the house to a stage where 20 mins a day in the dedicated room will do it; but we are not yet at that stage so I had a day off. OH did some laundry and attempted to scrub at a mould stain. Today- Bathroom, Spare Room and Cupboard Under the stairs.   Bathroom:   Before So to start off with grout got scrubbed. See the little white patch in the before? That was where I’d attacked it with baking soda about a week ago. As a result the bathroom was clean-ish but horribly cluttered. I got rid of any bottles that we didn’t use anymore, any face cloths that were damaged because they hadn’t been washed in a while (Note to self, next paycheck buy new ones- Ebay?) and just generally sorted. All surfaces got wiped down including the outside of the toilet bowl, the stem of the sink, the pipes behind the loo, the outside of the bath and the skirting boards. Emptied the bin, removed that POS “organiser” from around the stem

Sad week

We’re not having a very good week here in Gloucester. Sunday I was poorly and had to phone into work sick (I’m much better now) and then on Monday we had to have our oldest hamster put to sleep.  He’d been going downhill for the last few days, and when I got home from work on Monday, it wasn’t good, so the kindest thing to do was take him and have him humanely put to sleep, it would only have been a few hours if we’d have left him naturally anyway- best to put him out of his suffering. So then the next day we went back with Rommie the rat. She’s been having real trouble with balance, and she’s got so skinny even though she’s eating. The vet thinks she’s blind, and that it may be a brain tumour or an abscess on her brain. The only way to tell would be an MRI, and the best that could tell us is that there was something there; with a cat or dog there would be options but she’s a small animal and she’s old- Plus at the moment I wouldn’t be convinced that she’d make it through the anaes

Maggie and Gytha

On Sunday we returned home from a wonderful weekend away in Chester. When we got home and the girls saw us Gytha slinked out of their bed and came to the bars – which was incredibly strange for her. Never one for cuddles, she was always a bright spark and on the move. Petting her she felt cold, so I scooped her up and cuddled her in to my jumper to try and warm her up. We sat like that for a while, me stroking her head until she just slipped away. By the time we realised what was happening she was gone. Incredibly peacefully, almost like she waited for me to come back.   Shortly after returning from the vets (we have our animals cremated, with ashes back) Maggie started to wheese horribly. Gasping for air, crackling lungs. Fine before we left on the weekend, fine when we returned – an easy assumption is stress and grief for her sister. A return trip to the vets, where she was placed in an oxygen kennel but struggled every time she was brought out in the normal air. No way to
